Traditional safety is Results Based Safety. Led by safety organizations like OSHA, IOSH, NEBOSH, Safe Work Australia, British Safety Council, Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety, Health and Safety Authority, and Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, along with business and safety leaders, have become fully focused on safety results, and they have confused Results Based Safety (RBS) with Behavior Based Safety (BBS). Results are an indicator of whether you are effectively collaborating, training, educating, and conversing with your workers (i.e., leading, coaching, and regulating effectively). Generations of safety leaders have practiced Results Based Safety viciously. Business and safety leaders can be mean-spirited, arrogant, and condescending, express visions of grandeur, and create safety cultures of fear, and the worst thing ever is that they never really care for their people properly, just the results. The world of safety can be very abusive, like bad parents who are dysfunctional, but the business and safety leaders practice denial because deep down they don’t believe in people. Safety managers are forced to create an environment of chronic dis-ease. Keeping people in fear, anxious, stressed out, and worn out by constantly focusing on how they can ensure that their company operates safely? This is not a functional, healthy, or sustainable approach to managing the operational risks in business.
