Science is exact. What was the true root of the problem? It’s a challenge to sift through so many symptoms, but my research revealed that dysfunctional leadership, combined with the practice of RBS is the root problem in the safety industry. This realization regarding the safety industry has shaped my frustration and has driven my research to find solutions, but it also prompted me to write this book to provide clarification between the science of BBS and separate out the dysfunctional practice of RBS.
Everyone thinks they know about BBS, but what they practice is RBS. To make the necessary change in how safety is practiced, you need to understand how human behavior works. For example, if you think you know BBS so well here is a simple question to test your knowledge. How many types of consequences are there to all human behavior? When I ask business and safety leaders this question, they never know, and that’s a key indicator they are practicing RBS. Understanding human behavior will shape how business and safety leaders interact, how safety leaders are selected for their position, how safety leaders shape the safety culture, and how leaders progressively increase their influence with their team, their people, and their organization. Application of the science of human behavior leads to effective safety leadership and leveraging the incredible performance capabilities of people.
